The Larry Nassar Sex Abuse Scandal Part 1

Hello everyone, so this is the first case that I have been interested in and wanting to write about for so long so I'm hoping to do it justice and not get anything wrong or miss anything out that might be of importance, so let's just get into it...Photo from Sky News.

The man in the orange US Jail jumpsuit is Lawrence Gerrard Nassar or Larry Nassar. He was born on August 16 1963 in Farmington Hills Michigan in The United States. His family is from Lebanese background. His occupation was an Osteopathic Physician and Professor and was educated at Michigan State University as a Bachelor of Science and his years active were from 1978 to 2016. Now let's get into his personal life...

Nassar, like I said, was born in Farmington Hills Michigan and began work as a student athletic trainer for the women's gymnastics team at North Farmington High School in 1978 when he was 15 years old. This was actually recommended by his older brother Mike, who was an athletics trainer in the school. He graduated in 1981.

He studied kinesiology at the University of Michigan and earned an undergraduate degree in 1985. He also worked for the track and field and football teams. 

He was married from 1996-2017. 

He lived in Holt, Michigan when he was arrested in December of 2016. His wife was granted a divorce because of all of this and has 3 children. So that's a little bit on Nassar's personal life, now let's get into his medical career...

Nassar graduated in 1993 as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency training in family practice at a hospital called St Lawrence and then completing a fellowship in Sports Medicine in 1997. 

1997 - Began work as an assistant professor at MSU's Department of Family and Community Medicine in the College of Human Medicine. He was earning $100,000 a year (not sure how much that is in UK money) and is also co-author of six research papers on treatment of gymnastics injuries. Then there's his gymnastics career...

1986 Larry Nassar started working as an athletic trainer for the USA Gymnastics national team, working with John Geddert at Twistars Gymnastics Club in 1988 which is where Jordyn Wieber trained and retired in 2018 when USA Gymnastics had suspended him at the time of this horrible scandal. Nassar also worked as a team doctor at Holt High School in 1996 and was the national medical coordinator for USA Gymnastics from 1996 until 2014. 

So that's a little bit into Larry Nassar and who he is and what his career had been like and I've decided to do this in three parts, so tomorrow I'll be back with Part 2 of this terrible scandal with all of the gymnasts that he betrayed their trust with and like I mentioned at the start of this blog, I'm trying to do it justice as best I can and I have absolutely no intention at all of disrespecting anything that I have talked and written about.
